Welcome

Welcome

Many people in Chemnitz are looking forward to 2025 - when their home city will be the European Capital of Culture. Numerous ideas for projects are currently maturing in order to prepare an attractive programme. As a result, expectations are rising as to how the city of Chemnitz will present itself to domestic and foreign guests in both familiar and as yet unseen ways.

In August 2025, 60 young people from ten Central European countries will also be coming to Chemnitz. Embedded in the Capital of Culture, they will meet for the 19th Central European Mathematical Olympiad. There, they, who are among the best mathematical Olympians in their countries, want to show their individual creativity in solving mathematical problems in an individual competition and prove their team spirit in a team competition. With mathematics as a cultural asset, they and their companions will not only bring something to the Capital of Culture, but will also use their stay to get to know the city and its culture, economy and science.

Math Olympiads are a familiar activity in Chemnitz. The days in May 2019, when the national round of the 58th Mathematical Olympiad took place here, are unforgettable as the secret “capital of mathematics” (www.mo2019.de). Every year, hundreds of pupils compete for points and placings in regional and state rounds in Chemnitz. However, the international atmosphere in such a competition will be new for Chemnitz. After 2014 in Dresden, this high-calibre competition will be held in Germany for only the second time. The local organisers from the Faculty of Mathematics at Chemnitz University of Technology, the Chemnitz City Council, the State Office for Schools and Education and the Johannes Kepler Gymnasium Chemnitz are looking forward to the event!

There is still a long way to go – follow the progress of the preparations on these pages. Please do not hesitate to send us your comments and suggestions so that Chemnitz can once again become a worthy “Capital of Mathematics”.
